H2 Clipper, a developer of hydrogen-powered airships and hydrogen-focused infrastructure technology, has completed a simulated wind tunnel test of its hydrogen-powered airship.

In 2021, H2 Clipper was selected for inclusion in Dassault Systèmes accelerator program to advance its mission of developing and commercializing a fleet of airships that, according to the company, will transform the hydrogen and air transport industry. The use of Dassault Systèmes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) test platform allows H2 to simulate and evaluate complex engineering design concepts to perfect the optimal design for modern hydrogen dirigible.

The analysis as shown in the image below, confirms that the airship’s aerodynamic design achieves an extremely low level of residual drag and is another step in validating the airship’s operating performance and the company’s cost modeling.

According to H2 Clipper, its hydrogen dirigibles have numerous advantages over traditional forms of freight transportation including a 70% lower cost than that of traditional air freighters; lift payloads up to 277 tons; greater delivery speed – 7 to 10 times faster – than shipping by truck or cargo vessel. In addition, the company has also received numerous patents on using an airship to deliver liquid hydrogen to market, offering economic and logistical advantages over other methods of bulk delivery of hydrogen.

“The successful analysis with CFD marks a major milestone for the development of the ‘Pipeline-In-The-Sky’ airship and brings H2 Clipper one step closer to realizing our goal of providing the fastest, most flexible, and efficiently scalable way to transport fuel-grade hydrogen to market worldwide,” said Rinaldo Brutoco, the founder and CEO of H2.

H2 Clipper anticipates completing the construction of its hydrogen dirigible prototype in 2025, with a projected launch of its first full-sized airship in 2028.
